Geneen Roth Offers A Way To End Emotional Eating

Geneen Roth is a New York Times bestselling author of self help books for people with eating disorders.

Her books are based upon her own experiences and often include stories from participants of her workshops.

For over 30 years, Roth has been teaching others how to overcome emotional eating and cultivate healthy habits with food.

Her books speak to overeaters, binge and purge eaters, chronic dieters, and anyone who uses food as a substitute for love or as an emotional release.

About Geneen Roth

Roth shares that she had a deprived childhood and it led to a years-long struggle with compulsive eating and chronic dieting. She felt food was the one thing she could control and the one thing that wouldn't leave her by walking out or dying. Eventually she realized her overeating was linked to her continual dieting and that it had an emotional cause. When she resolved her emotional problems, and opened herself to love, her weight stabilized.

Geneen Roth began to teach others what she had learned and eventually compiled techniques they could use to overcome compulsive eating. She wrote a book on the experiences with her students and taught the techniques to readers too. Her books were bestsellers, and Roth became more involved in hosting workshops and retreats to help people develop their spiritual natures and break their bad habits with food.

Geneen Roth was on the Oprah show on multiple occasions and has had many other media appearances over the years including 20/20, Good Morning America, and The View. She has been written about in several leading newspapers and magazines such as Time, Cosmopolitan, and Elle.

The Message of Geneen Roth

Roth teaches that constant dieting and compulsive eating have their roots in spiritual and deeply personal issues. They are not only about food and body image. She teaches that the relationship with food is an expression of deep beliefs about the amount of joy, pain, or abundance people allow themselves to have. Roth offers techniques that are based in kindness and understanding rather than the usual poor self image responses that are punitive, harsh, and unforgiving. Geneen Roth teaches seven sets of eating guidelines along with self inquiry and meditation to cultivate natural eating.

Books by Geneen Roth

• "Why Weight? A Guide to Ending Compulsive Eating" is a book and ebook that was published in 1989. This book helps readers overcome the binge-diet cycle and learn how to make peace with food. She provides specific techniques taken from her workshops that help dieters lose weight and keep it off. She covers concepts such as making food a source of pleasure rather than anxiety, finding other pleasures in life, learning how to recognize the body's full and hungry signals, understanding what drives the compulsion to overeat, and distinguishing between emotional and physical hunger.

• "When Food Is Love: Exploring the Relationship Between Eating and Intimacy" was published in 1992 and is available as a book and ebook. In this book, Geneen Roth tells readers how emotional eating and compulsive dieting can actually substitute for real intimacy. The book contains stories from Roth's past as well as accounts of emotional eating from those she helped in lectures and seminars. Roth covers various aspects of emotional eating such as the need for control, the desire for the forbidden, and addiction to melodrama. She offers hope that change is possible by breaking self destructive patterns using the self help advice in this book.

• "Breaking Free from Compulsive Eating" is a book and ebook that was published in 1993. In it, Geneen Roth explains the concept of compulsive eating and the forms it takes. She links it to continual dieting and emotional eating. In addition to telling stories from her life and others she has helped, Roth offers readers self help advice they can implement to develop healthier relationships with food.

• "Feeding the Hungry Heart: The Experience of Compulsive Eating" was published in 1993 and is available as a book only. In this book, Geneen Roth tells of her battle with binge and purge eating. She spent years overeating followed by self starvation. She eventually healed herself and developed healthy eating habits and went on to teach what she learned to others. This book also contains stories from others she helped overcome emotional eating disorders.

• "Appetites: On the Search for True Nourishment" was published in 1997 and is a book, ebook, and audio book. In this work, Geneen Roth shares more of her personal experiences as they related to self esteem and eating issues. She offers positive self help advice to readers about separating food from self esteem, happiness, and spirituality. She explains emotional hunger needs to be filled with something besides food such as love and spiritual growth.

• "When You Eat at the Refrigerator, Pull Up a Chair: 50 Ways to Feel Thin, Gorgeous, and Happy (When You Feel Anything But)" is a book, ebook, and audio book that was published in 1999. In this book, Geneen Roth offers readers light hearted bits of self help advice to help overcome relationship problems with food. She offers techniques such as doing one nice thing a day, eating one hot meal a day, going on an anti-diet, and separating wanting to be thin from wanting to be loved.

• "Breaking Free from Emotional Eating" is a book and ebook that was published in 2003. In this work, Geneen Roth shares self help advice she teaches in her seminars. The tips she offers helps readers overcome their compulsions toward emotional eating and form more healthy eating patterns.

• "The Craggy Hole in My Heart and the Cat Who Fixed It: Over the Edge and Back with My Dad, My Cat, and Me" is a book and ebook that was published in 2005. This is a story about Roth's cat and her father, and how they taught her about living with love. Written with her usual wit, the book is funny and poignant. It helps readers understand the importance of love and how to never live without it.

• "Women Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything" was published in 2011 and is available as a book, ebook, and audio book. This book is the culmination of 30 years of research into the subject of food compulsions. Geneen Roth explains how relationships with food mirror feelings of anger, love, fear, and even relationships with God. She tells readers that eating patterns are a direct reflection of feelings about life. This self help book teaches readers how to go beyond food compulsions and explore the deep realms of soul and spirit.

• "Lost and Found: One Woman's Story of Losing Her Money and Finding Her Life" was published in 2012 and is available as a book, ebook, and audio book. In this work, Geneen Roth compares relationships with finances to relationships with food. She found there are many similarities such as emotional buying, overspending followed by budgeting, feelings of insecurity, and self sabotage. She discovered this after she lost much of her money in the Bernard Madoff scandal. She faced uncertainty, financial turbulence, and a reversal of fortune that created many of the same emotional triggers she had in her battle with compulsive eating.
